In 1963 Jack Newington bought land close to the River Nene in Oundle, Northamptonshire and turned it into the Oundle Marina. Four years later the first Fairline vessel, the Fairline 19, was launched, merging traditional handcraft with modern glass-reinforced plastic boat construction methods.

In 1974 Fairline brought the Phantom 32 seven berth family cruiser to market. This was the first in a long line of Phantoms that brought the company success over the following thirty years. Many other boats followed, including the Turbo 36 in 1981, the Targa in 1985, the Squadron large yacht range in 1991 and the 48 series in 2014.
In 2016 Fairline joined forces with Vripack, the Dutch naval architects, and Alberto Mancini, an Italian boat designer. The collaboration produced the Targa 63 GTO in 2017, a yacht which went on to win ‘Best Exterior Design’ at the World Yacht Trophies later the same year.
